Jürgen Vollmer, 1958
Astrid Kirchherr, damalige Freundin von Klaus Voormann, wurde durch den gemeinsamen Freund Jürgen Vollmer inspiriert. Ende 1960 lernte das Trio die Beatles im Kaiserkeller kennen. Bei Fotosessions verliebte sie sich in den Beatle Stu Sutcliffe und überzeugte ihn von diesem Haar-Style.

George's erster Auftritt mit neu gestylter Pilzkopf-Frisur im Top Ten Club 1961 in Hamburg.
Stu Sutcliffe war der erste der Beatles, der sich im Frühsommer 1961 von Astrid Kirchherr von diesem Haarstil überzeugen ließ. George folgte im Sommer, John und Paul erhielten im Okt. 1961 von Jürgen Vollmer in Paris den neuen Schnitt verpasst.
Pete Best, damalis ihr Drummer, widersetzte sich diesem Trend, Ringo Starr kam erst im August 1962 zu den Beatles.

Am 8. Februar 1964 kamen die Beatles in der Ed Sullivan Show ohne George zur Probe, der mit einer Halsentzündung im Bett lag. Weniger bekannt ist, dass Vince Calandra an diesem Tag als Statist (quasi als Ehren-Beatle) bei 3 Liedern einspringen durfte.
